How to demand Belgian nationality under the category "Naturalisation" :

Nationality under naturalisation is granted by House of Representative(Chambre des représentants), of Belgian Federal Parliament.

Before January 1 of 2013, after completing three years of legal stay in Belgium any person aged 18 or more years, could apply for a naturalisation.
Since 1 of January 2013, naturalisation has only been granted as an exceptional act resulting in appreciation that the applicant possesses exceptional merits in the fields of sport, culture, or science.Since new act of citizenship for naturalisation , no residence period is formally required.

To be able to apply for naturalization:
The applicant must:
  1. have reached the age of 18.
  2. legally reside in Belgium.
  3. to have testified or to be able to testify to Belgium of exceptional merits in the scientific, sporting or socio-cultural fields and, therefore, to be able to make a particular contribution to the international influence of Belgium.
  4. explain why it is almost impossible to acquire Belgian nationality by making a declaration of nationality in accordance with article 12bis.
To be able to claim exceptional merits:
The applicant must be able to provide proof of the following:

  • In case of exceptional merits in the Scientific field:

    • a doctorate

  • In the event of exceptional merits in the Sports field:

    • having satisfied the international selection criteria or the criteria imposed by the COIB for a European championship, a world championship or the Olympic Games, or being in the case where the federation of the sports discipline concerned considers that he or she can represent added value for Belgium in the context of the eliminatory or final phases of a European championship, a world championship or the Olympic Games.

  • In case of exceptional merits in the Socio-Cultural field:

    • to have reached the final selection of an international cultural competition or to be rewarded on the international scene because of its merits on the cultural level or because of its social and societal investment.
